VIP Projects

Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) are project-based learning opportunities for students to work alongside faculty as they pursue ambitious research, industry, and community endeavors. Multi-semester participation encouraged, and students can enroll in 1-2 credits at the 200, 400, and 500 levels. Build skills, networks, mentorships and new horizons!

CURRENT PROJECTS

AUTONOMOUS ROBOTIC SYSTEMS
Join a team working to complete NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) challenge to build a robot that will return extraterrestrial soil samples. VIP Coach: Dr. Steve Swanson, former NASA Astronaut and Boise State Distinguished Educator in Residence.

BIG DATA IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR
Explore Big Data and public-sector decision making. Participants will engage with Big Data research efforts, scholarship design and implementation, and faculty and community partnerships.  VIP Coach: Dr. Eric Lindquist, technology and policy expert in the School of Public Service.

BIO-INNOVATIONS
The goal of this project is to understand how biological systems innovate through the evolutionary process to make novel structures and functions. Our current focus utilizes data intensive DNA sequencing. VIP Coach: Dr. Eric Hayden, Microbiologist partnering with Physics faculty on microscopy.

DEVELOPING SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS
A humanitarian effort focused on providing cost-effective, products and services that will empower families and communities in need. VIP Coach: Lynn Catlin, 20 years in engineering industry, partnering with Construction Management faculty and international aid organizations.

IMMERSIVE VIRTUAL REALITY
Team learning to capture, create, edit and build virtual reality environments. You will gain practical experience in developing virtual reality soft- ware, applications and digital environments. VIP Coach: Dr. Steve Cutchin, Computer Science professor and data visualization expert.

MAKE IT
As a member of the Make It! team, you will work on strategy for the growth of the Maker Space in the library, as well as explore the technology and community to make the spaces open, accessible, and impactful .VIP Coach: Amy Vecchione, Head of Web and Emerging Technologies for Albertson’s Library.

MODELING SUSTAINABILITY
What if we could automatically discover recipes for making new materials by working backwards from what we want? This team helps make this dream a reality by developing open software. VIP Coach: Dr. Eric Jankowski leads the Computational Materials Engineering Laboratory.

NASA MICROGRAVITY UNIVERSITY
Work on challenges for NASA’s Asteroid Redirect Crewed Mission in the early 2020s and outreach to local schools and communities promoting NASA and STEM. VIP Coach: Dr. Steve Swanson, former NASA Astronaut and Boise State Distinguished Educator in Residence.

PHOTO LAB
Learn digital camera skills and fundamentals of storytelling. Projects will center around telling the stories of their peers engaged in other CI+D courses. VIP Coach: Shawna Hanel, photographer.

PLASMA MEDICINE
Join an interdisciplinary team developing a plasma-based technology to facilitate wound healing in diabetic patients. VIP Coaches: Dr. Oxford (BIOL), Dr. Cornell (CHEM), Dr. Plumlee (ME), Dr. Jim Browning (ECE). Team meetings: Friday 2:00-4:00PM.
